Aesthetician
A trained professional who provides beauty, spa, or salon treatments and services, such as facials and massages that relax the body and clean or beautify the skin.

 

 

Algotherapy
A therapeutic application of warm seaweed paste body wraps used as a spa treatment to induce relaxation and enhance rejuvenation of the skin. Also considered the use of algaes in body scrubs, baths, and skin care.

 

 

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Internationally known as a "wonder" ingredient originally derived from fruits, AHAs were introduced into products in the 1990s. AHA is the family name for a variety of acids: citric acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. Exfoliants that remove the flaky, dead skin from the epidermis (the skin’s outermost layer) to improve the skin’s texture and color and speed up cell renewal. Also used in moisturizers to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles, remove blemishes, and protect the skin.

 

 

Aromatherapy
The therapeutic use of herbal, essential (extracts or essences), botanical oils that are distilled or cold-pressed from plants, herbs, trees, and flowers. The oils are generally used topically, internally, or to stimulate the olfactory senses.

 

 

Astringent
A toner helpful in controlling surface oils by causing skin tissue to tighten. Lowers the pH after cleansing the skin. A substance such as witch hazel or alcohol that decreases secretions or controls bleeding.

 

 

Awareness
The percentage of target customers who are aware of a company or a brand name. Prompted awareness is when a product is recognized from a list, while spontaneous awareness is unaided.

 

 

Ayurveda
An ancient science or traditional system of holistic medicine that originated in sub-continental India 5,000 years ago. A system of medicine of mind, body, and soul, ayurveda is considered preventive health care. The name means "knowledge of life," from a Sanskrit word meaning "life science."
