AIFF
Audio Interchange File Format is a common Macintosh mono or stereo audio file storage system that utilizes uncompressed audio data. The quality is much higher, i.e. 48kHz, which results in a much larger file size that is compatible with QuickTime. AIFF is widely used in professional programs that process digital audio data.

alpha channel
Additional information stored in an image file defining transparency.

animatic
A roughly animated storyboard used to give the animator an idea of the timing of a sequence and how the scene will look. Often, it is accompanied by a rough audio track.

artifacts
Also called noise. Distortion caused by audio or video compressed at a low bit rate.

aspect ratio
The width to height relationship in video. Television’s standard ratio is 1.33:1, with the image being 1.33 times wider than the height. Other ratios are Anamorphic (1.85:1), Cinemascope (2.85:1), and High Definition Television (16:9).

asset
An imported element used in a DVD project, such as still images, audio and video clips, menu and button graphics, and text.
