Sample Sewer
A person with excellent sewing skills who constructs the prototype garment using equipment and production processes similar to those that would be used in the manufacturing process.

Scrubs
A pant set consisting of pants and a tunic top with round or
v-neck and short or long sleeves. Adapted from garments worn by physicians when operating on patients and now used for casual wear mostly by men.

Sheath
Straight, narrow fitted dress usually with no waistline but shaped to the body by vertical darts or with a set-in waistline.

Shirtings
Fabrics traditionally used for men’s shirts and now used for women’s shirts as well. Fabrics such as broadcloth, chambray, madras, oxford, and poplin are commonly used.

Shrug
A shawl and sweater combination, fitting over the back like a shawl. From elbow to wrist the edges are drawn together to form brief sleeves. Formerly popular at seaside resorts. Became popular again in 2005.

Soft Goods
Fashion and textile merchandise, e.g. dresses, lingerie, coats, and household textiles.

Surplice Bodice
A day bodice was first worn in 1881. The top of the dress wraps rather than buttons. It may be plain or pleated at the shoulders and waistband.
