demographics
Statistical data used to describe a population in terms of personal characteristics such as age, gender, income, ethnic background, education, religion, occupation, postal code, and lifestyle.

department store
A retail establishment that carries different kinds of merchandise and houses them in various departments, different sections, or on special floors.

direct mail marketing
The process of sending postal mail to a retailer's customer base, sometimes this is for a "targeted" consumer base, i.e. a specific customer group who receives the mail targeted to their tastes or interests.

discount store
A retail establishment that offers volume goods and limited service; sells merchandise below normal retail prices. According to Prentiss Hall, it is characterized by (1) a broad merchandise assortment; (2) centralized checkout service; (3) merchandise normally sold by self-service with minimal assistance; (4) no catalog order service; (5) private-brand nondurable goods and well-known manufacturer-brand durable goods; (6) hard goods accounting for a much greater percentage of sales than at traditional department stores; and (7) a relatively inexpensive building, equipment, and fixtures.
