Basket Weave
In knit construction, purl and plain loops are combined with a predominance of purl loops in the patterns to provide a basket-weave effect.

Batik
A resist-dyeing process during which portions of the fabric are coated with wax. Throughout this process only the uncovered fabric sections take the dye. This method can be repeated many times on the same fabric so that several different colors can be used.

Bayardere
Term used to describe stripes that run crosswise in a knit or woven fabric.

Beaded Velvet
Velvet with a cut-out pattern made on a Jacquard loom. This fabric is used primarily for eveningwear.

Beaver Cloth
Heavy but soft fabric with a very deep nap that is primarily used in overcoats.

Bengaline
A fabric with a crosswise rib made of textile fibers such as cotton, wool, nylon, or rayon, often in combination.

Birdseye
Cloth woven on a dobby loom with a geometric pattern having a center dot that looks like a bird´s eye. Originally made of cotton and used as a diaper cloth because of its absorbent qualities, but now the weave is made from a variant of fibers and fiber blends for many different end uses.

Blend
A yarn or fabric containing two or more different fibers, variations of the same fiber or different colors and grades of the same fiber.
In blended yarns, two or more different types of staple fibers are twisted or spun together.

Boucle
A knit or woven fabric made from a rough, curly, knotted boucle yarn. Can be made from wool, but also rayon, silk, cotton, linen, blends, and some hair fibers. Often used in sportswear, jackets, and coats. French for "cuckled" or "ringed."

Brocade
A Jacquard-woven fabric with an all over interwoven design of raised figures or flowers. The pattern uses contrasting surfaces or colors and often has gold or silver threads running through it.
