Fabric
A textile structure produced by interlacing yarns, fibers, or filaments.

Face
The better-looking side of a fabric.

Fade-ometer
Laboratory device used to determine the colorfastness of a fabric when it is exposed to light.

Fagoting
An embroidery technique produced by pulling out horizontal threads from a fabric and tying the remaining cross threads into groups of an hourglass shape.

Fashioning
The process of shaping a fabric during knitting by increasing or decreasing the number of needles used. Used in hosiery, underwear, and sweater manufacturing.

Fiber
A unit of matter characterized by having a length at least 100 times its diameter or width. The fundamental component used in making textile yarns and fabrics.

Filament
A fiber of an indefinite or extreme length, such as those found naturally in silk.

Findings
Miscellaneous fabrics in garments such as facings, waistbands, pockets, linings, zipper tapes, etc.

Finish
A substance or mixture of substances added to textiles to give specific properties or to create a desired effect such as drape, water repellence, flame retardance, crease resistance, etc.

Flannel
A warm, soft fabric of wool, worsted, cotton, or rayon made in tightly woven twill or plain weave and finished with a light napping. Originally from Wales, flannel has a dull finish and is made in a variety of weights.

Fleece
The entire coat sheared from an animal at one time.
