Sanforized
A process to preshrink fabric. Fabrics with this trademark should never shrink more than 1%.

Sateen
A cotton fabric made in a satin weave.

Secondary Colors
Green, orange, and violet, each of which is made by mixing two primary colors.

Serging
A method used to finish the edges of area rugs by using a heavy, colored yarn sewn around the edges.

Smart Textiles
Textiles that can sense and react to changes in the environment, such as changes from mechanical, thermal, chemical, magnetic, and other sources.

Soy
A new fabric with a silky feel that is produced from the soybean plant.

Spandex
A manufactured elastomeric fiber that can be repeatedly stretched over 500% without breaking and will still recover to its original length.

Staple Fibers
Short fibers, typically ranging from ½ inch to 18” long. Wool, cotton, and flax exist only as staple fibers. A group of staple fibers are twisted together to form a yarn, which is then woven or knit into fabrics.

Strand
A single filament, fiber, or monofilament.

Swatch
A piece of fabric used as a representative sample of that item.

Synthetic Fabrics
Fabrics that are not from natural origins. Synthetics include manmade polyesters and polyvinyl fiber derivatives such as acrylic, nylon, and spandex that have been synthesized from petroleum and carbon derivatives.
