Pannier
Undergarments worn by women in the 18th century that extended a skirt´s width at the sides, yet left the front and back flat. Rich embroidery and woven patterns embellished the flat panel. It developed into the "robe française" by the mid-18th century, insuring that a woman would occupy three times the space of a man and always created an imposing spectacle. In the Marie Antoinette´s French court, panniers extended the skirt up to several feet on each side. The term refers to "paniers," a French word for the wicker baskets that were slung on the side of a pack animal. Also called side hoops.

Pinafore
A sleeveless garment for women worn like an apron. A similar term is the pinafore dress, which is British for what Americans know as a jumper dress. The main difference is that the pinafore is open in the back. Pinafores may be worn as a decorative garment or as a protective apron. The pinafore was originally pinned to the front of the dress.
