Sailor Suit
Popular outfit for children in the 1870s, consisting of bell-bottomed trousers, short jacket, a wide collar, and a black neckerchief.

Skeleton Suit
An popular outfit for small boys from about 1790 to 1830, consisting of a tight, buttoned, short- or long-sleeved jacket paired with high-waisted trousers. They were one of the earliest fashions just for children, rather than sized down adult styles. Skeleton suits came in various colors and were typically worn with a white blouse or a shirt with lace or ruffle trim.

Skip
A large wicker box or basket, often with wheels, for storing costumes and/or props while touring.

Smoking Jacket
Informal, waist-length jacket made from luxurious fabrics such as velvet or silk, with turn-up cuffs and a shawl collar, popular in Victorian times. It was designed for men to wear while smoking pipes or cigars after dinner and came in rich colors.

Swaddling
An age-old custom of wrapping an infant snugly in a swaddling cloth or blanket to tightly restrict movement of the limbs. Swaddling bands were also used to further restrict the movement. It was believed that swaddling was essential for proper posture.

Swallow-tailed Coat
A riding coat with the front corners buttoned back to prevent the coat from touching the horse.
