The following list is an introductory sampler of Fashion, Interiors Design, and Entertainment terminology. Each month we will introduce a new list to provide you with industry-specific terms related to FIDM's majors.

 

It is our hope that you will use these words to augment your classroom activities, your presentation follow-up activities, and your curriculum-related coursework.

 

This is a living glossary, and suggestions are welcome for additions to our vocabulary list.

 

 

anorak
Believed to be an Aleut word (native population of Aleutian Islands, Alaska); a hooded garment usually hip length and used by the native population living by the Arctic Circle to protect themselves from the wind and cold. It has been adapted by the fashion world, and is usually worn on sporting activities.

 

 

astrakhan
Fur fabric originally made from the expensive curly black or gray fleece of lambs from Astrakhan, southern Russia, now usually made from acrylic fibers. It is used for hats and trimming coats
