I'm the English Department Head at Ocotillo High School in Phoenix, Arizona. You sent a representative named Joanna Craig out to my school to discuss with the students the options your institution (FIDM) offers.
I felt it pertinent to email you about Ms. Craig's performance. She arrived early to set up for the class. That impressed me. When speakers come and don't arrive early, we are the ones who run around trying to get everything set up. She came early and made certain that her presence and presentation would not be a burden to me. She was impeccably dressed. She looked as though she worked at Vogue; the exact perception I would think FIDM would be trying to achieve. She was outgoing and friendly. She made me feel at ease the second she walked through the classroom door.
Our students are mostly underprivileged and below poverty levels. They loved Ms. Craig. She never spoke down to them or made them feel inadequate. She engaged them in the learning process; she showed them the connection between writing and fashion writing. Each student felt as if they may be able to do this "fashion writing thang" after Ms. Craig left.
As a teacher, I was equally impressed with the assignment she generated for the students to do. She made them her workers for a day, and they had to compile a press release for a new clothing line. A lot of the students were stuck and weren't generating anything. Ms. Craig blurted out a headline that could be used to grab people's attention. And it did just that. The students then began to work trying to top Ms. Craig's headline. She walked around the room, asked students if she could read their work, and praised their efforts. She took the FIDM material and beautifully wove it into an English Lesson.
Thank you for hiring this outstanding woman, and thank you for sending her out here to meet my students.
