Statement
Statement

In my view, education in the United States, and perhaps worldwide, is the story of a constant struggle between excellence and equity. Excellence asks the questions: “What is the standard? Has it been met? Is it too high or too low? Does the standard when met signify improvement? Equity asks the questions: “Is it fair? Does everyone get to participate? Does everyone get some prize?”

During my connection before joining the Board and while on the Board, I have been continually impressed with FIDM’s unselfish and generous commitment to education in general, and, of course, its specific commitment to education in the fashion and merchandising industry.

My school has been the beneficiary of FIDM’s commitment, and I gladly signify my appreciation by assisting as a member of the Board, a Board that is as collaborative, as it is effective and “down to business.”

While my field of expertise is a long way from fashion in its various permutations, through my work on the website, as well as in my discussions with other Board members who are in the field, I can appreciate the value of the FIDM educator website to educators in the various fields. It was my honor and pleasure to work with others in the painstaking design, discussion and execution of the site, and for those in the field, I know it will be an important resource for ideas, lesson plans and widening the lenses for the many fortunate students who will be the indirect recipients.
