Creating awareness of different cultures is at the center of Culture & Diversity Week launched recently by FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising at Duarte High School in Southern California. Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., the introduction of this week is meant to be the start of a new journey for exposing students to various cultures.
California is one of the most ethnically diverse states in the nation. Students exposed to this program learn how American culture was created, the challenges faced throughout the progression of history, and how the United States developed into the diverse nation of today. In celebration of the diversity that makes up America today, various role models present inspiring stories of how they have broken barriers to become a success in a multi-ethnic environment.
Estevan Ramos, FIDM Alumnus and Fashion Designer for stars such as Christina Aguilera, Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, and Angelina Jolie, appeared at this launch event at Duarte High School. He talked about growing up impoverished in East Los Angeles and, despite all challenges, graduated with honors from FIDM and was able to eventually start his own clothing line.
Culture and diversity represent the face of America in a globalized world and the hope is to spread Culture & Diversity Week to other California high schools.
