The overall experience was great. The students were attentive and responsive. They were focused, and the program was great. Having the students tour a school which caters to a specific major created an experience and an advantage that students do not usually receive in high school.
I believe the library experience was entertaining and informative. [It was interesting] to see how fashion is used in the movie industry and let the students understand that not only do you buy clothing in stores, but the fashion industry is greatly involved in all aspects of the movie industry. Looking at the forecast magazines, the books on designers, Vogue magazines, and other materials gave the students an idea of what is really involved in the fashion industry. Most of the students wanted to go back to the library and look at more literature.
I believe the students enjoyed the tours. They received an up close and personal view of the facilities and the classrooms, plus they were able to ask questions. The tour guides gave great information, not only on the facilities, but also talked about what it takes to get into the school, asked about career goals, asked if they had filled out scholarship forms, and showed different areas where the students get information about jobs and other valuable resources. These questions made the students think about the choices they are making. It was also great to be able to talk to a student that was doing a draping project and see samples on the wall of what has to be turned in at the end of the semester.
My students were excited about the experience. Many did not realize that there are other opportunities in San Diego. Many students will be going to Community Colleges because they feel they have no other choice. Now that they have been introduced to another choice, they may take the opportunity to venture out and see what is available. Students need to know that they have choices and with those choices come responsibility.
I would tell other educators to fill out the application and try to give their students the opportunity to explore other options. We are having so many problems finding money to give our students opportunities outside of the school walls. Why not apply for grants to get the monies to be able to show our students different outlets to further their education? In our Student Survey, the students said that they do not get enough Field Trips to see what is outside the school boundaries. We must make an effort to give the students all we can while we have their undivided attention.
