The Interiors Industry

As more businesses realize that good design improves customer and employee satisfaction, the field of Interior Design is growing at a faster rate than other creative professions. Most Interior Design jobs are located on the East and West Coasts, with the highest concentration found in the high-income cities of California, Texas, New York, and Florida. In California, the major design firms are located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orange County, and San Diego.

Interior Designers work in two categories: residential and commercial. Designers can be employed by architects, furniture retailers, engineering and construction firms; their services are key to the design of public spaces like hospitals, schools, government agencies, and theme parks.

Interior Design is an exceptionally flexible profession, with 25% of workers self-employed. Currently, approximately 73,000 Interior Designers are employed in the US, with half the practitioners holding bachelor’s degrees and half associate’s degrees. In addition to Interior Designer, career options include: Art Director, Furniture Designer, Project Manager, Set Decorator, Textile Designer, and Wall Covering Designer.
